Feeling regal with an Imperial 70 at the Old Imperial Bar in Tokyo, Japan.
It’s the 138th Kentucky Derby!
One of my favorite memories as a kid was going to Portland Meadows with my Dad. While he carefully calculated the odds on a notepad – a vacillation between Rainman and Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind – my betting criteria revolved around the horse being white (I thought it mostly closely resembled a unicorn).
Needless to say, I never made a fortune at it and my dad usually made out quite well. And he always made sure we had plenty of Red Vines and Dr. Pepper to snack on, which is half of the fun.
Similarly, the Derby wouldn’t be the Derby without the proliferation of Mint Juleps in the stands.
And to that I issue you and order: Tomorrow, don an unreasonably rococo hat. Root for your favorite horse and sip a Swizzle-worthy string of mint juleps! Cheers to you, cheers to the Run for the Roses and may your Derby day dazzle you.

As I experiment with ideas for the cocktail I will serve at Bee Free Boutique next Thursday (A boudoir-styled affair with the lovely ladies of Sassybax lingerie doing complimentary fittings), I plan to offer my own Swizzle twist on the piscine: a classic and elegant drink from the South of France, consisting of sparkling wine served on ice with fresh strawberries. Perfect for feeling foxy and effervescent while trying on elegant underthings!
If you can’t wait to try mine, Fig & Olive on Melrose offers a lovely one.
Orrrrr, there’s also this trailer for Jacques Deray’s 1969 melodrama La Piscine (The Swimming Pool) starring a bikini-clad Jane Birkin as Penelope, a gangly, nubile teen kitten lounging about in the perfect poolside attire for a South of France menage à quatre.
Zou bisou cheries and happy Friday!
To misquote the Eagles, this is not just another Tequila Sunrise…
Perhaps more akin to a Singapore Sling than the Tequila Sunrise we’re most accustomed to (a mix of tequila, grenadine and orange juice, or a steamy, romantic 1988 thriller with a mix of Michelle Pfeiffer, Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell), Gene Sulit’s version (invented at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel) consists of such:
Biltmore Original Tequila Sunrise
1 1/4 oz. Premium Tequila
3/4 oz. Créme de Cassis
Fresh Lime
Soda Water
PROCEDURE:
Fill glass with cracked ice. Add tequila, Créme de Cassis and a squeeze of lime.
Fill with soda. Garnish with fresh orange wheel and enjoy.
Last night my family was having a barbeque at the ranch they are currently building in Oro Valley, Arizona. My mother and I made homemade corn chips, guacamole and a cocktail I decided to coin “The Prickly Pear Aloerita.” Part margarita, part sunburn soother, part cactus fruit, I made a batch for our 8 guests. First though, we filmed a quick how-to video just before the sun set over the devastatingly handsome Catalina mountains. And speaking of rugged, please pardon the construction noise!
